STEPS

Tell one safe person

Before programs, before paperwork — “don’t do this alone”

Get an assessment

  • It figures out what you are dealing with (substances, mental health, stress)

  • Recommends the right level of care (not more than you need)

  • Does not force you into treatment

Make the environment safer (Today)

  • If possible, remove substances from your space

  • Avoid people and places tied to use

  • Eat, hydrate, and rest

DO NOT DETOX ALONE — stopping suddenly could be dangerous

Decide the right level of treatment

Recovery is not one size fits all. Here are a few common options:

  • Outpatient counseling (weekly support)

  • Intensive outpatient (IOP) — several days a week

  • Residential treatment (short-term and structured)

  • Faith-based recovery

  • Peer support groups (AA/NA)

Ask for help with the details

Logistics stop people more than addiction does

It’s okay to say:

  • “Can you help me make this call?”

  • “Can you sit with me while I talk to them?”

  • “I’m scared — I don’t know what to do next”

Let someone help carry the load
